This was actually incredibly insightful. It was awesome seeing the progress from the first iteration and then improved based on feedback. Great video!

This is great! Are you taking requests? Would love to see something like live updating of user alerts à la Facebook's 'new message' alerts or something similar, especially now with ActionController::Live

I really enjoyed these couple of episodes. Really insightful peek into David's thought process.

Absolutely, Evan! You can submit requests on We have an episode coming up that touches on notifications and alerts, but it's focused on client side JavaScript. Maybe we can do one on ActionController::Live in the future. I think it's really cool and we have used it for a couple things in Code School :)

Gregg, you said that there are 7 more of that 7 more with DHH? Or 7 more in general? Are you guys planning on doing this with other programming "heroes"? :) Thanks for the amazing stuff!

Hey Da-Dave. Now it's 6 more, not with DHH, but with other well known brands. You'll have to wait and see =)

Isn't sorting on the client side problematic unless we load all the data when we're paginating? Client-side sorting can work when we're sorting by date and only pulling the last day worth of data for example, no? (I mean if the sorting criteria change, we'd have to pull again from the server)

About This Screencast

In this episode of Feature Focus, Gregg Pollack and Carlos Souza walk you through their creation of Basecamp's progress timeline functionality. They're joined by David Heinemeier Hansson, the founder and CTO of Basecamp (and creator of Ruby on Rails), who provides feedback on their feature implementation.

Feature Focus is a screencast series focused on practical feature builds and development problem solving. Watch as we build out well-known site features in a simple way and then sit down with the original product developer to get feedback on our implementation.
